Todo bien, todo correcto

Hemos avanzado un poco en el tema del análisis. Quizas os preguntéis que quiere decir hacer análisis en física de partículas cuando trabajas para el LHC, yo también. Los detectores que tenemos en el túnel recogen  señales eléctricas que dejan las diferentes partículas al pasar por los diferentes subdetectores. Estas señales nos dan información sobre qué tipo de partículas se han creado y su energia y dirección. Evidentemente cuando se produce una colisión de dos protones se crean una cantidad de partículas muy grande y solo hay algunos procesos que nos interesan pero al ser "raros" o poco probables se tienen que filtrar de todo el resto que no nos interesan. Por tanto cuando estas haciendo un análisis, en mi caso concreto sobre quarks top me interesan solo los eventos en los que se creen estas partículas específicamente, asi que primero se tiene que hacer un cribado general para quedarte solo con los eventos que te interesan. Una vez tienes tu muestra has de aplicar unas condiciones que necesitas que se cumplan para saber seguro que lo que se esta produciendo es el proceso que tu quieres y no algún otro que se pueda parecer. Una vez ya tienes toda esta información lo que haces es reconstruir, en mi caso la pareja de quark top i antiquark top. Reconstruir quiere decir, en mi caso, calcular su masa a través del estado final del proceso. Hay muchas partículas que tienen un tiempo de vida muy pequeño por tanto no se pueden detectar en nuestros detectores pero si podemos ver las partículas en las que decaen y a partir de ahi reconstruir las que buscamos. Y eso es un poco lo que estoy intentando aprender a hacer ahora mismo. Es super interesante y muy guay pero es muy difícil también, hay un montón de cosas a tener a cuenta y cuando empiezas de cero se te hace todo un mundo, pero con la ayuda de mi compi voy poco a poco entendiendo el código y haciéndolo funcionar. Ya he producido mis primeros plots :D

A todo esto mi vida social ha mejorado considerablemente y poco a poco voy conociendo la ciudad y los alrededores. Me he apuntado a un equipo de futbol, que evidentemente no entrena por la situación de covid por el momento pero en algún momento lo hará. El martes pasado iba a ir a escalar con cuerda (hay un grupo de escalada en DESY!!!) pero como siempre el maravilloso tiempo de Hamburgo decidió que no escalaría yo esa semana así que se puso a nevar como si no hubiese un mañana.

También  recordaros que soy idiota... Hace como 3/4 semanas pedi hora en el medico aquí en Alemania. Lo busque todo des del ordenador que es aleman por tanto no traduce la pagina. Pedi hora porque siendo yo tan tullida en general necesito tener un medico que sepa de mi vida aquí y por temas de la vacunación del covid. Total que me dieron hora para hoy a las 9.15. Me levanto temprano esta mañana, desayuno, como bien he aprendido de mi madre me pongo las bragas bonitas (no sea que me quiera pesar o algo el medico y me tenga que desnudar) y me dirijo hacia mi cita. El sitio esta como a 20min caminando de casa así que salgo con tiempo de sobras y mientras camino voy repasando como le voy a explicar todos mis problemas medicos en ingles. Llego a la calle y al numero que ponía en internet y no soy capaz de encontrar una consulta medica, sigo mirando, parece que hay un callejón, entro pero ahi solo hay un dentista. Total que después de estar una rato dando vueltas digo voy a buscarlo en el mobil a ver como se llama porque asi puedo preguntar. En el momento en que lo pongo en el mobil, este lo traduce inmediatamente y me sale en super grande bienvenido a tu dentista de confianza. En ese momento se me aparecen mis padres diciéndome tanto dinero invertido en tu educación para esto...  Total que sigo sin tener medico de cabecera pero tengo unos dientes limpísimos.

Ya he pedido hora con lo que creo que ahora es un medico general y no un dentista, ya veremos... La conclusión que saco de todo esto es que mi aleman es lamentable, pero aun así no desisto, en algún momento mejorara.

I am learning how to do the analysis. Maybe you're asking yourself what does it mean to do an analysis in particle physics when you work for the LHC, me as well. The detectors in the tunnel detect electric signals coming from the particles when they pass through the sub detectors. This signal give us information about the type of particles created and their energy and direction. When a proton proton collision occurs a lot of different particles are created but we are only interested in some processes that normally are rare or have low probability, therefore we need to filter these information. When you're doing an analysis, in my case top quark analysis, I'm only interested in the processes where I can find these particles. Once you have your sample of information you have to apply some conditions that are needed to be sure that you're looking at the processes you want and not into something similar. Then you have to reconstruct these particles, in my case pairs of top quark and antitop quark. Reconstruct a particle means in my case to compute the mass of the quarks through the particles in the final state. Most of the particles produced in the LHC has a really low lifetime therefore there's not enough time to detect them on our detectors but we can detect the particles in what they decay and from their energy and mass reconstruct the particle we're looking for. So this is what I'm trying to do right now. It's really interesting and super cool but also really difficult, there are a lot of things to take into account and starting completely by zero makes you feel really little. However, my colleague is really helping me and little by little I'm understanding how the code works and even make it work. I already produced some plots :D

On another topic, my social life has improved, I already know a bit the city and the surroundings. I join a football team, we are not training now of course because of the situation but I hope at some point we'll do. Last Tuesday I was about to go to climb outside with two colleagues (there's a climbing club at DESY!!) but as always the weather of Hamburg decided that I was not climbing that week, it started snowing as hell.

Also just a friendly reminder that I'm an idiot... 3 or 4 weeks ago I made an appointment with a doctor here in Hamburg. I looked for it in my computer which is German so it don't translate automatically websites. I needed an appointment cause since I'm living here for 3 years and regarding that my health is maybe not the best I should have a doctor here that know about me and my problems and also because I want to get the vaccine. So, my appointment was today at 9.15 in the morning. I wake up early this morning, I have breakfast, as my mom always told me, I wear beautiful underwear and I go to the doctor. The place is like 20min walking from my place so I start walking through there thinking how I'm gonna explain all my issues in English to the doctor. I arrive to the street and number that I had written but I cannot find any doctor's office. It seems that there is an alley so I enter there but I can only find a dentist so I decide to google it to see the name of the place so I can ask someone where to find it. In the moment I write it on my phone it translates the website and I can read in a super big font: Welcome to the dentist website. In this moment I can see my parents telling me, so much money invested in your education for this... So the recap is that I still don't have any general doctor neither a date for the vaccine but my teeth are super clean.

I already booked another appointment to what I think is a general doctor and not a dentist, we'll see...The conclusion is that my German is extremely bad... I hope it'll get better at some point.
