Breath of Hope

Este año ha empezado fuerte! He estado en una escuela. En el mundo académico una escuela es como una conferencia que dura entre 1 y 2 semanas y en vez de ver charlas te dan clases, igual expertos en el tema y con los últimos estudios i descubrimientos. Y los físicos son especialmente buenos en escoger la localización de las escuelas, en general en verano son en la playa y en invierno en la montaña. Porque todo el mundo sabe que un científico feliz igual a mejor investigación.
La verdad que esta escuela ha sido diferente a cualquier evento al que he acudido desde que empecé con mi carrera científica (que hace ya más de 10 años...) primero porque de las más de 100 personas participantes creo que éramos 6 físicos, el resto eran ciencias políticas, relaciones internacionales, historiadores, etc. Una oda a lo interdisciplinario!
Esta escuela era sobre riesgos nucleares, disrupciones tecnológicas y conflicto internacional en tiempos de turbulencia, título de una peli de James Bond. I la verdad es que cada día me convenzo más de que he escogido correctamente mi camino porque me lo he pasado increíble, he aprendido muchísimo y he conocido a tantísima gente super interesante que aún no lo supero.
Hemos tenido clases sobre la estrategia nuclear de prácticamente cada país que tiene armas nucleares o que está jugando con la idea, hemos hablado sobre nuevas tecnologías y como afectan a la toma de decisiones a nivel de armas nuclear, del uso del espacio como defensa o como ataque, de economía global y de como se usan las tarifas como armas y sobre geopolítica en general i como de importante es entender la política doméstica para interpretar las diferentes posiciones en cuanto al uso de armas nucleares de cada país.
Pero es que además de las clases he hablado con tanta gente de tantos países diferentes, sobre todo no europeos que me han explicado la realidad de la política tanto de Pakistán, India, Israel, Irán, Qatar, Afganistán, Ucrania, China, Sudáfrica, Kosovo, Rusia... una locura la cantidad de información de primera mano. Poder discutir de política desde tantos puntos de vista tan diferentes me ha volado la cabeza.
Y parece obvio, pero es tan importante entender la historia de cada país para poder entender el porqué de como actúan delante de una provocación o como pueden entender ciertos actos como provocación o como ataque, creo que es fundamental que a la hora de hablar de cualquier país que no es el nuestro nos informemos primero de la cultura y de la política doméstica porque si no es muy fácil equivocarse i hacer una lectura incorrecta. Y Otra vez suena obvio, pero lo más fácil es preguntar y comunicarse al final todos somos humanos y ya está.
Me ha volado la cabeza el hecho que durante 1 semana entera hemos estado juntos en el mismo hotel, comiendo juntos y aprendiendo juntos gente de tantísimos países, algunos de ellos que están en guerra entre ellos, con conflictos de verdad, con países matando a civiles de otros países, países que sobre el papel se odian, y todos ellos han estado allí sentados los unos al lado de los otros debatiendo temas muy tensos con total respeto y educación.
Y si me preguntáis a mí, después de esta semana tengo la respuesta para conseguir la paz mundial, simplemente tienes que poner a todos los jefazos de los países en un mismo club, música i un cubata y no hay dios que no se haga amigo. Yo después de haber bailado todos juntos, chinos, estadounidenses y rusos el YMCA no creo que haya nada que no se pueda conseguir.
Esta semana ha sido increíble por todo lo que he aprendido, pero creo que lo mejor y lo mas importante que me llevo, es una bocanada de esperanza en estos tiempos tan turbios. Hay mucha gente interesada en la paz, hay mucha gente trabajando por ello y hay mucha gente tendiendo puentes y sobre todo asegurándose que hay una comunicación educada y respetuosa entre países rivales. Todos los países buscan que su población viva en paz, ser felices y no tener que pensar nunca en la guerra, y absolutamente ningún líder, ni país, ni humano con dos dedos de frente, quiere utilizar jamás bombas nucleares. Así que quizás no estamos tan lejos de conseguir llegar a un acuerdo si somos capaces de continuar hablando entre nosotros y respetándonos.

This year has had an intense start! I was in a school. In the academic world a school is similar to a conference, it lasts between one and two weeks and instead of talks you have lectures. They are still given by experts and they teach you the latest studies and discoveries. Physicists are extremely good at choosing the location of these schools, in general if they are during the summer you do them near the beach and if they are in the winter you go to the mountains. Because everyone knows that a happy scientist means better research.
To be honest, this school has been different from any other event I have been to since I started my academic career (more than 10 years ago...) because out of more than 100 participants I think only around 6 were physicists, the others were political scientists, international relations, historians, etc. So interdisciplinary!
This school was about nuclear risk, technological disruption and international conflict in an Age of Turbulence, the title of a James Bond movie. And with every day that goes by I am more convinced that I made the correct decision by choosing this field. I had such a great time, I learned so so much and I have met so many super interesting people.
We had lectures about nuclear strategy of almost every country that has nuclear weapons or is playing with the idea of acquiring them, we have talked about new technologies and the effect they have on the decision making related to nuclear weapons, how to use space as a defensive tool but also offensive, about global economy and how tariffs are being weaponized, and about geopolitics in general, how important is to understand domestic politics to be able to correctly interpret the nuclear strategy and policy of different countries.
But on top of that, I talked with so many people from around the world, mostly outside of Europe, who have explained to me first hand their political reality, Pakistan, India, Israel, Iran, Qatar, Afghanistan, Ukraine, China, South Africa, Kosovo, Russia... It's crazy the amount of information I got. Being able to discuss politics from so many different points of view just blew my mind.
And it seems obvious, but it is so important to learn the history of each country to be able to understand why they act the way they do in the face of a provocation or how they can understand certain acts as provocation or direct attacks. I think it is essential to inform ourselves about the culture and the domestic politics of a certain country before talking about their actions, it is so easy to make mistakes and misread them if you are missing information. And again, it sounds obvious, but the easiest is always to ask and to communicate with each other.
It blew my mind that during 1 entire week we have spent every day in the same hotel, eating and learning all together, people from countries that are in war with each other, with real conflicts, countries that are killing civilians of other countries, people that on paper have to hate each other, and every single one of them was sitting there learning, talking next to each other, arguing about really tense topics in a polite and respectful way.
If you ask me, I only needed one week to figure out how to achieve world peace, just place every boss or leader from each country in a club, turn on the music, give them a cocktail and it's impossible that they won't be friends by the end. After dancing all together, I have seen the Chinese, the Russians, and the US citizens dancing YMCA together with a smile. Anything is possible.
This week has been incredible for everything I learned, but the most important thing I got from this is a breath of hope during these awful times. There are a lot of people interested in peace, there are a lot of people working towards it and there are a lot of people building bridges and making sure that polite and respectful communication exists between adversary countries. Every single country wants their population to live in peace, be happy and not have to think about war, and absolutely no leader, no country, or no one with half a brain is willing to use nuclear weapons ever. So maybe we are not that far from reaching an agreement if we are capable of keeping talking to each other..
I will keep working on that!
