Mis primeras medidas

Voy a contar un poco más sobre los detectores, como ya dije en el acelerador hacemos chocar partículas, y como tenemos diferentes partículas necesitamos diferentes detectores. Las partículas las podemos diferenciar por su massa y su carga eléctrica (negativa para el electrón, positiva para el protón y neutra para el neutrón, por ejemplo). Los detectores del CERN se pueden dividir en 4 grandes partes:
- Un tracker, donde las partículas dejan una traza y así puedes saber su momento (velocidad). Normalmente son detectores de silicio (en los que yo trabajo!)
- Calorimetro electromagnetico, donde se detectan las partículas con carga electrica (electrón, protón, etc).
- Calorimetro hadrónico, donde se detectan las partículas sin carga (neutrones y demás partículas neutras) y las particulas cargadas más masivas que no han perdido toda su energia en el eectromagnético.
- Cámara de muones, para detectar muones, que son unas partículas parecidas al electrón pero con mucha más massa y debido a esto no pierden practicamente energia al pasar por el detector y por eso necesitan un detector especial.
Yo me encargo de estudiar como funcionan los detectores de silicio que explicare más adelante.
Muchas veces me han explicado lo que se siente cuando se tiene un hijo. Mucho tiempo esperandolo y cuando llega es fantastico por mucho sufrimiento que hayas tenido que pasar por el camino. Creo que el viernes experimenté un sentimiento parecido, cuando tuve delante mis primeros datos analizados, me sentí tan orgullosa, y pensé son los datos más bonitos del universo y, encima los he hecho yo, en seguida me dí cuenta que había puesto mal un parametro y que tenia que repetir la medida, pero esos 5 segundos de observar mis datos fueron maravillosos y espectaculares. Así que por fin he empezado, pero me ha durado poco la alegria. Hice medidas a 20ºC y para poder comparar como funciona el detector he de hacer medidas a temperaturas diferentes, concretamente a -20º C, pues la señora máquina ha decidido que no quiere bajar hasta los -20ºC, así que llevamos intentando des del viernes que llegue a esa temperatura y no hay manera. Conclusión: no he hecho más medidas.
Por cierto, comprarme una bici creo que ha sido la mejor inversión que podria haber hecho. Me encanta levantarme pronto e ir en bici al trabajo, es una sensación super guai. Aún no se como llego a la hora cada dia, si solo abrir los ojos me cuesta horrores, pero llego como de mejor humor. Y también llego muy sudada, porqué no había caido yo, pero estoy en medio del monte, por tanto no hay un solo camino plano. Llevo el ventolín a mano porqué hay cada subidita en el camino... Pero lo reitero, una gran inversión.
Bueno este fin de semana ha sido bastante movidito también. El viernes cuando volví de trabajar me fuí a Ginebra a dar una vuelta, me topé con un concierto de jazz en medio de la calle (eran las fiestas de Ginebra) y allí me quedé hasta que tuve tanto frío que decidí irme (cuando hay sol puedes llegar a los 32 perfectamente, pero a la que se va te plantas en 12 y tu con pantalón corto y manga corta).
El sábado era el DÍA, así que quedé con unos amigos y nos fuimos a Ginebra a ver los fuegos, son los fuegos más espectaculares que he visto. Duran una hora y los lanzan des de los puentes y des de los barcos que hay en el lago. Incluso ponen gradas y puedes pagar por ver los fuegos en una posición privilegiada, unos 70€ que cuestan los asientos). Después de ver los fuegos nos fuimos de fiesta (lo que aquí en Suiza se considera fiesta acaba a las 2 de la mañana, pero algo es algo).
El domingo fui con 3 amigos a hacer una via ferrata a fort l'ecluse. Las vistas son espectaculares y la ferrata es una pasada, buscadlo en google porqué merece la pena (no tengo ninguna foto, me dejé el móvil en el coche). Después de comer fuimos al lago con la canoa y allí estuvimos hasta que se fue el sol. Después fuimos a ver el barça (absteneros de comentarios sobre el partido, gracias) y a dormir.
Hoy hemos estado todo el dia intentando solucionar el tema de la temperatura y no ha habido manera. Mientras esperabamos a ver si llegabamos a los -20ºC hemos estado mirando videos graciosos de gatitos en youtube, si amigos, así avanza la ciencia.
Cuando he vuelto a casa he ido a comprar cosas que me faltabana, esta vez con lista de la compra. Ha estado bastante bien, hasta que he ido a poner la lavadora y me he dado cuenta que no había comprado jabón para lavar la ropa (lo tenía apuntado en mi lista), así que he tenido que volver a bajar, menos mal que esta como a dos minutos de mi casa.
PD: Os he de confesar una cosa, este fin de semana, concretamente el domingo, prové las hamburguesas veganas, y atención porqué estan buenas. No quiero ningún comentario al respecto como, te lo dije , etc.

I'm talking about the detectors. As I said, the large hadron collider is used to collide particles, as we have different particles, diferent detectors are needed. We can distinguish particles for their mass and their electric charge (negative charge for electrons, positive charge for protons and no charge for neutrons, for example). The detectors used at CERN are formed by 4 regions:
- A tracker, where the track of the particles is seen, so you can compute their momentum (velocity). Normally, they are silicon trackers (My detectors!)
- Electromagnetic calorimeter, where charge particles can be detected (electron, proton, etc)
- Hadronic calorimeter, where neutral particles are detected (neutrons and other non-charge particles)
- Muon chamber, for detecting muons (particles which are as the electron but with more mass), because of its higher mass they don't loose energy in the calorimeter so an special detector is needed.
My job consists on study how silicon detectors works, and I will explain them another day.
Often people explain their feelings they when have a child. A lot of time waiting for him or her, and when finally arrives, despite of the suffering during 9 months, it's awesome. I think that I feel exactly this on Friday, when I saw for the first time my analyze data, I was so proud of myself. I thought that these data was the most beautiful data in the universe, and it was mine. At once, I realize that one parameter was wrong so I had to repeat the measurement, but the 5 first seconds looking my data were amazing and wonderfull. So on Fryday I began my measurements, but we realiz that we had a problem. I measure my detector at 20ºC and to compare how it works y have to measure it at diferent temperatures, specifically at -20ºC, the fantastic machine that I have to use, doesn't want to arrive at this temperature, so until Friday we are trying to reach -20ºC but we haven't achivied this yet. Conclusion: I haven't made more measurements since Friday morning.
By the way, buying a bike is the best investment I could have done. I love wake up early and go to the work by bike, it's a super cool feeling. I don't know how I can arriva at time, open my eyes at morning is so difficult for me, but when I arrive I'm in a good mood. And also when I arrive I'm sweating a lot, I'm living at the mountain, so there are a lot of climbs. I have always my inhaler on the bag... But even so it's a good investment.
So on, this weekend has been very interesting also. On Friday when I come back of work I went to Geneva, while walking I founs a jazz concert (It was Geneva festivals) I was there until I was so cold (When the sun shines the temperature is around 32ºC, but after the sunset the temperature is around 12ºC, and as you are dressed for summer, you get cold).
Saturday was the DAY of the Geneva festivals, so I met with some friends to go Geneva for see the fireworks. I think they are the most amazing fireworks I have seen, they last one hour and the fireworks are thrown from the bridges and from boats that are in the lake. Even, there are platforms with seats where you can see the fireworks in a privileged position (they cost around 70€). When the foreworks finished we went out to party (only until 2am it's Switzerland not Spain).
On Sunday I went with three friends to a Via Ferrata at fort l'ecluse. The landscapes were amazing and incredible, google it because it's impressive (I didn't take a photo because I left my mobil at the car). After having lunch we went to the lake with the canoe, and we were there until the afternoon. After all we went to watch the mathc, Barça against Madrid (no comments about the match, thanks) and went sleep.
Today we have been trying to solve the problem with the temperature and we couldn't. While we were waiting for the temperature we have been watching funny videos about cats on youtube, yes, that's exactly how science moves forward.
When I came home I have gone to buy some things that I needed, this time I had a shopping-list. It has been great, until I have had to put the washing machine and I realised that I hadn't got soap for the laundry (it was on my list), so I had to go another time.
PS: I have to confess, that this weekend, on Sunday, I ate vegan burguers, and they were great! I don't want any comment about it.
